A three-rink ice sports centre in Matinkylä built in 2019-2021 for young skaters, with an NHL-size rink
Ilmatar Areena is an ice sports centre in Matinkylä, Espoo, designed especially for young people. It was built in 2019-2021 and has three rinks, one of them NHL-size. The gross area is about 14,000 square metres.
Its extra rooms make it a training environment for young hockey players and figure skaters, and schools and workplaces use it as well. The second floor holds the lobby, stands and gym, and the third floor a small hall for figure skaters and two integrated ventilation plant rooms.
The facade takes snow and ice as its starting point: white concrete wall sections stand for the faces of a snow mountain, and pale blue polycarbonate panels in the middle symbolise a wall of ice. The building runs on wind power and a solar power system, and is connected to a virtual power plant so that it can sell the energy it produces.
