Pirkkola's two-rink ice hall of 2021, in Helsinki's 1960s sports park

Pirkkola ice hall stands in Pirkkola sports park, a cluster of sports facilities in Helsinki's Central Park, near the junction of Hämeenlinnanväylä and Ring I and about half an hour from the centre of Helsinki. A 1959 design competition for the park was won by Kaija and Heikki Siren's proposal Sammakkomies. The fields were finished in 1965-1967 and the swimming and ball hall in 1968.

The ice hall is much newer. The City of Helsinki had a new hall built, finished in autumn 2021. It has two rinks, and its main users are Helsinki figure skating and ice hockey clubs. Rink bandy and ringette also get ice time, and the HIFK women's league team moved here from Malmi.

The sports park draws over a million athletes and fitness-minded visitors every year, and with the new hall yearly visits were expected to rise to around 170,000. The hall was traditionally in heavy use, and its renewed lighting system allows performances to be staged there.
