A Joure ice club founded in 1858

IJsclub de Vlecke was founded on 28 November 1858, with the nobleman Valerius Vegelin van Claerbergen as co-founder. For the club's 40th anniversary in 1898 a new 'artificial rink' was made behind the Catholic church, 160 metres long with a 20-metre turning stretch at each end, and it was named the Vegelinbaan after the founder and patron.

Many races were held here, among them the Dutch championship. At a speed-skating race on 26 January 1897 the winner was given 100 guilders. Women's races, unusual at the time, were held in Joure too: a second club, Eensgezindheid, organised races only for women from 1879 to 1885.

On 24 January 1929 the club got a new rink, when the Nutsdepartement decided to lay a trotting track and an ice rink east of the Harddraversweg, and in good winters the rink is still there.
