Planned by a citizens' committee, opened in 1961, roofed in 1976 and named after Olympian Adam Kowalski
The idea of an artificial ice rink for Kraków came from the Cracovia hockey legend Czesław Marchewczyk, who also chaired the citizens' committee that built it. Official permission arrived in 1959, construction began on 1 July of that year, and the rink opened on 18 February 1961 with a match against Start Katowice, which the visitors won 3-1.
A small second ice sheet was added in 1966 (it no longer exists) and ten years later the whole rink was put under a roof. The city's Krakowianka budget unit managed the hall for decades, and in the 2000s the cooling system was changed from ammonia to freon-glycol.
The rink now carries the name of Adam "Roch" Kowalski, a three-time Olympic ice hockey player (1932, 1936 and 1948). Its main sheet measures 28 by 58 metres with 2,514 seats, the modernised hall has hosted events such as the Continental Cup and the Hockey Champions League, and the latest city-supervised modernisation was completed at the end of 2023.
