The ice hockey section in Vrchlabí was founded in 1948 on natural ice. The stadium's artificial ice rink was opened on 10 December 1977, with many volunteers from among the hockey players helping to build it.
The turning point was roofing the rink: preparations began in 2000, the 2001-02 season was played in makeshift conditions during construction, and the finished building opened on 28 October 2002 as one of the most modern sports venues in the Hradec Králové Region. HC Vrchlabí s.r.o. runs the winter stadium under a lease from the town.
The men's team was promoted to the second league in 2004-05, and since June 2011 the club has been HC Stadion Vrchlabí s.r.o. HC Krkonoše, founded in 2007, is the joint youth hockey club of Vrchlabí and Trutnov.
