A clay pit turned skating pond: IJsclub Lonneker, founded in 1972 behind the village

IJsclub Lonneker was founded in 1972, when shrewd members of the village council bought the clay pit of the former brickworks. The rink lies hidden among trees at the edge of Lonneker, and sister skating clubs often remark that Lonneker has once more produced a beautifully prepared ice surface.

The ice masters do not open the rink until the whole surface carries at least 8 to 10 cm of perfect ice. When snow stops the ice from growing, the rink committee can flood it with water pumps, and on nights with good frost the rink is sprayed with a home-built hot-water sprayer.

In the 1985-86 season the Elfstedentocht led a group of villagers to form a skating training group, which became the club's training activity.
