Three outdoor ice rinks run by the Iwate Sports Promotion Foundation, open from November to March
Currently out of season The foundation's page still shows last season (1 November 2025 to 1 March 2026) and gives the usual window as November to March. The 2026/27 opening date is not posted yet. Official schedule update
The Iwate Prefectural Skating Rink in Morioka was completed in November 1972 on a site of about 34,700 square metres. It is an outdoor complex with a 400 metre speed-skating oval, 15 metres wide, and separate ice hockey and figure-skating rinks of 60 by 29 metres each.
A refrigeration plant of four turbo chillers freezes the three sheets through buried pipes, laid as a direct system for the speed oval and as hairpin loops for the hockey and figure rinks, and the stands seat 1,600 people. Drinks are sold from vending machines in the rest rooms.
The rink is open from November to March and is closed on Mondays, 31 December and 1 January. In 2024 the opening was put off because record heat delayed the ice-making, so the season start is announced year by year.
