Buying a rink in Fribourg in 1982 and rebuilding it in Les Ponts-de-Martel looked like a gamble, and the Union sportive took it up. The club's volunteers put in 20,000 hours of work over two years, and the installations were inaugurated in 1989. The ice sheet measures 60 by 30 metres and is open from September to March for all ice sports.
The covered Bugnon rink is run by members of the Union sportive and by people of the village and the valley, all volunteers, which the club says is unique in Switzerland: about fifty volunteers run the whole installation, and their nickname is the ants, "fourmis". Skating, ice hockey, figure skating and curling are practised here from early September to the end of March.
No professional works at the rink; even the staff of the snack bar and the people who drive the resurfacer are unpaid.
