Two-rink Strašnice stadium built by private investors in 2018, behind a white aluminium facade
Škoda Icerink in Prague-Strašnice began with a group of private investors who decided to build a winter stadium with two ice surfaces. They got a building permit within ten months, and the stadium opened within a year of the foundation-stone ceremony, in 2018. It was the first full-fledged winter stadium to grow up in Prague in fifteen years.
The studio Vrtiška–Žák designed the building. Its front facade is a white, organically shaped mass of aluminium cassettes carried on diagonal beams, a reminder of the ice surface, and LED lighting can change its colours at night. Škoda Auto is the main partner of the project.
Inside there are the two rinks, a children's corner at the entrance, and a first-floor fitness room, massage and bistro overlooking the ice. After less than a month of operation, top athletes were already sharing the ice with primary and nursery schools, and the rink runs its own skating school for children from four. European champion Tomáš Verner and junior world hockey champion Martin Holý, the project's ambassadors, lead the training.
