Université Laval's two-rink arena, opened in 1976

The PEPS, Université Laval's sports complex in Québec, goes back to 1946, when chemistry professor Philibert L'Écuyer began pressing the university to build physical education and sports facilities for its students. Work started on July 14, 1969, and the complex opened on September 9, 1970, under Gaston Marcotte, who had been put in charge of the university's new sports service that March. It was popular from the start, with 6,000 members after a few months.

Marcotte was also behind the project to build the PEPS arena, together with the Department of Physical Education. The arena and its two rinks were inaugurated on January 24, 1976, for the complex's fifth anniversary, and one of the rinks seats 2,000 people for events on the ice. Designed at first for the university community, the PEPS opened in 1980 to everyone in the Québec urban community.

Both rinks host skating, figure skating and hockey lessons, along with free sessions in each of those activities. Non-members join public skating by buying a ticket at the arena's service counter, and the complex around the arena has kept growing, with a major expansion completed on June 13, 2013.
