Ice sport in Sonthofen began in the 1920s on two ponds, and in the early 1930s the municipality opened the outdoor pool in winter and prepared a 95 by 45 metre ice surface there. After the Second World War the Marktanger became a natural-ice stadium, and in 1958 the ERC Sonthofen was founded and given an artificial-ice stadium on the Hindelanger Straße.
The stadium, then unroofed, opened on 14 November 1959. The town took it over in 1973 and still owns and runs it, and in 1982 it decided to roof it. Members and supporters of the ERC built the two end stands and the main stand themselves, and the stadium is still open on three sides today.
At the opening the hall held almost 3,200 spectators, with a record of about 4,000 in the 1980s and 1990s; today it holds 2,200, 800 of them seated. The ERC Sonthofen plays its home games here, and the SSC Sonthofen ice-stock shooters and many hobby ice-hockey teams use it as well.
