A multi-arena on the site of the 1981 artificial ice rink
Sørmarka Arena is a multi-arena with a long-track speed skating oval, a 17.5 metre climbing wall, a bouldering wall and a speed wall, five curling sheets, an ice hockey rink and a large free-play area on ice called the penguin rink. The hall was built where the old artificial ice rink from 1981 had stood. It officially opened on 1 October 2010, although the first event in the building was a Whitney Houston concert on 6 June 2010.
The arena stands in the Sørmarka sports park in Stavanger and belongs to Folkehallene, which is owned by the municipalities of Stavanger, Sandnes, Sola and Randaberg. It has hosted the 2013 European Curling Championships, held from 22 to 30 November, and its first speed skating World Cup, on 29 to 31 January 2016. Outside the ice season the building is used for concerts, trade fairs and other commercial events.
