Ice hall completed in 2000 on private initiative with volunteer work; municipally owned since 2020
The Pirkkala ice hall was completed in 2000 on the initiative of private individuals and was built largely with volunteer work. The municipal council supported it through loan guarantees and by buying ice time, and the hall's effect showed immediately in the success of ice hockey as a hobby. It became a municipal subsidiary in 2003, and Pirkkalan jäähalli Oy passed fully into municipal ownership in 2020.
By June 2022 the hall's technology had been renewed: the freezing system was replaced with one that meets EU rules and uses carbon dioxide as the refrigerant, and the heating, water, ventilation and electrical systems were renewed too. Energy consumption fell by about 30 percent, and the new technology keeps the stands warmer than before. Pirkkala estimates that the renewed hall is one of the most environmentally friendly in the world.
