The Zwammerdam ice club received a royal medal in 2013 for 125 years of volunteer-run ice
Currently out of season This is a natural-ice rink: the club's home page says the rink is currently closed. The club floods a field near the Dikke Molen and opens the rink once the ice is ready. Official schedule update
The Zwammerdam ice club was founded in 1887 to provide a good ice rink on the field near the Dikke Molen, and in 2012 it celebrated its 125th anniversary. On 13 December 2013 it received a Royal Honorary Medal from alderman Du Chatinier because, as a club of many volunteers, it had made ice fun for 125 years.
Every winter the volunteers inventively flood a piece of agricultural land to make a natural ice floor. Skaters often use the rink as the starting point for tours, swapping shoes for skates at the clubhouse and heading straight out onto the ice, and when the surrounding waters have not yet frozen the club often comes to the rescue because its own ice is ready.
