Two NHL-size rinks installed in 2018, when a nonprofit rebuilt the old Family First Sports Park
The ice at Erie Sports Park dates from 2018. That January the nonprofit Greater Regional Erie Athletic Team Training (G.R.E.A.T.T.) completed its purchase of Family First Sports Park, renamed it ERIEBANK Sports Park and started a multimillion-dollar renovation, helped by a $3 million state grant. The work installed two NHL regulation-size rinks and eight full-size locker rooms, including rooms specifically for women and referees.
The complex was later sold to two new owners and split into separate businesses, with the sports center continuing as a place to get out on the ice. One of its partners, Tim Pagano, said a key goal was getting children started in hockey at four, five and six years old. Today the building holds the two NHL-size rinks, named the UPMC Rink and the LESA Rink, and a sports performance and fitness center.
A multi-year partnership later put the LECOM name on the facility, with an initial five-year agreement. The park hosts numerous tournaments and a full schedule of games through the year, and LECOM said the deal would let some community groups use it free of charge on designated days.
