The Erie Zoo's ice arena
The rink began as a zoo project. John M. Cochran, founding president of the Erie Zoological Society in 1962, led the zoo's expansion, and a forty-year $1.08 million bond issue that was in large part his work paid for the ice arena and the Pixieland children's zoo. The arena was named the JMC Ice Arena in his honor.
After renovations it reopened in 2019 as the Flo Fabrizio Ice Center. It remains a nonprofit owned and operated by the Erie Zoological Society, which runs the rink as a source of income during the months when the zoo itself is closed.
It is a single-pad facility with four locker rooms, bleacher seating and concessions. The Ice Center is home to Harborcreek Hockey and the Westminster Figure Skating Club, and its public skates add a live DJ, a fire to sit by and a photo booth.
