A lit ice trail of nearly a kilometre on the St. Lawrence, in a park built around a wastewater plant
Actualmente fuera de temporada The City of Repentigny's arenas and rinks page says outdoor rink conditions vary with the weather and that its rink-status information is updated daily only while the rinks are open; no 2026/27 opening date is posted yet for the Île-Lebel ice trail. Skating at Parc de l'Île-Lebel means a lit ice trail of nearly a kilometre, decorated with lights that cast a soft multicoloured glow, on the bank of the St. Lawrence in Repentigny. Ambient music plays along it later in the day. The park officially opened in 1992 with a large celebration that launched its first festival of shows for young audiences.
The island has had several names and owners. Pierre LeGardeur granted it to the priest Louis Chaignon, and it was called l'île du Presbytère before it became l'île Lebel. In 1858 the lumber merchant Theophilus Cushing built two wharves on its north-west side, and his sawmill burned in 1890. The island was sold to Télesphore Thouin in 1920, and the channel was filled with earth as a bridge, which turned the island into the peninsula it is today.
The City bought the island around 1985 and expropriated its residents to build a wastewater treatment plant, and the park took shape on the land around the plant. In 2017 the federal Canada 150 community infrastructure program contributed to the park. A permanent marquee that holds up to 300 people for private events also serves as a heated place to lace up skates on busy winter weekends.
