A 1979 addition to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Patty Center

Patty Ice Arena was built in 1979 as a 1,300-seat addition on the west side of the Patty Center, the University of Alaska Fairbanks building dedicated in 1963. The Patty Center was designed by Linn A. Forrest Architects. Hockey at the university came indoors for the first time in 1969, in the Beluga inflatable dome that stood on campus in front of where the Patty Center is now located.

The Nanooks moved into the Patty Center in 1979 and on to the Olympic-size ice of the Carlson Center in 1990. The Patty Ice has a capacity of 1,200 and is home to an NHL-sized rink. The Alaska Nanooks hockey team uses it for daily practices, and it is the site of their annual Blue/Gold Scrimmage.

In 2006 about 2,000 square feet of new locker room space was built on the south side of the arena. New hockey boards and new flooring in the bench and bleachers area were installed the same year.
