Home of the Fernie Ghostriders
The Fernie Memorial Arena is one of Fernie's core recreational facilities and the home of the Fernie Ghostriders junior team, which hosted the 2011 Cyclone Taylor Cup, the BC junior 'B' provincial championships, in front of a sold-out crowd.
On October 17, 2017, an ammonia leak at the arena killed three workers: two City of Fernie employees and one refrigeration employee from Calgary. The Ghostriders played the rest of the 2017-18 season at the Elk Valley Leisure Centre in Sparwood.
Two months after the arena closed, Fernie opened a new NHL-sized outdoor rink, built through a donation from the Calgary Flames Foundation and local volunteers, with a loonie buried at centre ice in honour of the three lives lost. The City then decided to replace ammonia with a synthetic refrigerant before the 2018-19 season, which allowed the arena to reopen.
