Built for the 2011 Canada Games and kept by popular demand

The Emera Oval, first called the Canada Games Oval, was installed on the Halifax Commons for the 2011 Canada Games. It opened to the public for skating and lessons in December 2010, and it hosted speed skating at the Canadian Masters Championships in January 2011 and at the Canada Games that February.

The oval was due to be removed in March 2011, but hundreds of people came each day, with some estimates as high as 2,000 in a single day, and the fixture was made permanent. Each winter it becomes the largest outdoor, artificially refrigerated ice surface east of Quebec City.

The Oval is open year-round, with skating in winter and biking, rollerblading and skateboarding in the warmer months. The Nova Scotia Masters Speed Skating Club skates here through the outdoor season.
