Four ice pads since September 2017
RBC Centre opened in September 2017 as the Dartmouth 4PAD, built at a cost of about CA$43 million. The name describes the building: three NHL-sized ice pads and a fourth, Olympic-sized pad under one roof.
Soon after it opened, the Halifax Mooseheads moved their offices, training and practice facilities into the new arena. Through the fall and winter the ice is shared among minor hockey leagues, ringette, speed skating, women's and men's non-contact hockey leagues, senior hockey and daily shinny games, alongside public skating sessions for families, seniors and parents with tots.
The building is not only an ice venue. In 2023 the RBC Centre was the box lacrosse venue for the North American Indigenous Games, and its change rooms serve outdoor fields as well as the rinks. An estimated 1.5 million-plus people visit each year.
