Built in 1960 as an outdoor rink, now a regulation 200-by-85-foot sheet at the Eister Center
The Sunbury Ice Rink is part of the Sunbury Youth and Community Center, built in 1960 and renamed in 2017 for the James R. Eister Youth and Community Center in honor of the long-serving councilman and director of parks and public property. It started as an outdoor ice rink and became the facility it is today.
The sheet is regulation size, 200 feet long and 85 feet wide. In recent years the city added two 20-by-12-foot youth hockey locker rooms, LED lighting, a camera system, a new sound system and a skate sharpening machine.
The rink is a home practice facility for the Susquehanna Stampede and the hockey teams at Susquehanna and Bucknell universities. City Administrator Derrick Backer calls it a staple of the community for generations, and councilman Jim Eister says people use it from all across the state. When the ice comes off, the rink hosts roller derby, roller hockey and special events.
