Opened in 1976 as Laurium's Bicentennial Arena

The George Gipp Arena opened in 1976 as the Bi-Centennial Arena, an artificial-ice rink of non-regulation size that the Calumet Hockey Association welcomed as a place for its younger players to develop. It went up at the old airport site, and the indoor hangar rink nearby was turned into a garage for village equipment.

The rink belongs to the Village of Laurium. When public skating ended at the Calumet Armory over liability concerns, it became the area's main source of open skating, and it still opens every November through March for public skating, hockey, figure skating and private rentals. Its Bi-Centennial Mite Tournament, held each late February, is one of the most popular of its kind in the Upper Peninsula.

Laurium's indoor skating goes back much further. The Palestra, built around 1900, hosted a campaign speech by Theodore Roosevelt; the Superior Ice Palace on Isle Royale and Third Streets was the first indoor ice rink; and after the streetcars stopped, the car barn and then the airport hangar served as rinks.
