Named for Kelowna's Second World War dead

Kelowna Memorial Arena went up in the 1940s and carries its name in tribute to the city residents who served in the Second World War and the ones who did not come home. It was built as an ice-hockey arena, and by the mid-1950s it seated about 2,600 people in a city of around 12,000. The Kelowna Packers of that era played here for seven seasons and 280 games, drew standing-room crowds to its Tuesday, Friday and Saturday games, and became the first Canadian ice hockey team to play an exhibition tour in Sweden and the Soviet Union.

Junior hockey followed. A Kelowna Packers team joined the BCJHL in 1985, was renamed the Spartans in 1989, and disbanded in 1995 to make room for the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League. The Rockets spent their first four seasons at Memorial Arena while Prospera Place was built, and moved there in 1999. The Westside Warriors also played their first games here.

The ice is 180 by 80 feet, too narrow and too short for Hockey Canada's standard sheet. Because of that smaller ice, the rink is now used by Kelowna Minor Hockey and the Okanagan College Hockey League, and the Kelowna major midget tournament has long been held here. In 1986 the arena hosted the World Women's Curling Championship.
