A town rink started by the Kiwanis Club
Kiwanis Ice Arena is owned and run by the Town of Saugerties but carries the name of the local Kiwanis Club, some of whose members thought the town should have an ice arena. The club began raising money for a rink in 1998, and the arena opened in February 2000. It stayed open-air until state senator John Bonacic helped secure state funding to cover it.
The Kiwanis bought the boards, the Zamboni and the lobby, along with the major ice-making equipment for the 197-by-85-foot sheet, and handed the project over to the Town. A manager said in 2019 that the rink sits right in the middle between the Albany and Poughkeepsie-Newburgh rinks.
Hockey here runs through a youth hockey association that includes a coed program, an all-girls program and a learn-to-play program for ages 5 to 10, with an all-women's program alongside. The arena runs a men's league, which counted 13 teams in 2019, and is home to the Skating Club of Saugerties. A grant from the New York Rangers helped the arena open its ice to skaters with various handicaps.
