An outdoor rink since 1922

Bear Mountain State Park has had an outdoor ice-skating rink since 1922, when the first facility was built at the edge of Hessian Lake, north of the Bear Mountain Inn. It hosted 500,000 skaters in the 1928-29 season and served as home for the West Point hockey team. A fire destroyed it in 1941, and the park built a new facility the following season.

The current rink was constructed in 1955 and remains outdoors and uncovered, set against Bear Mountain with views of the Hudson River and the Bear Mountain Bridge. The Palisades Interstate Park Commission announced its 2022-23 opening, noting that the rink had been voted Best of the Hudson Valley in 2021.

Local hockey teams use the ice, and the rink serves as a Learn to Play location for the NY Rangers; its site also points skaters to the Rockland Revolution Hockey Club. A Skate with Santa event was planned there for December 17, 2022.
