A 1986 city arena that opened with a used chiller and was rebuilt around a new one after a 2026 vote
The Negaunee Ice Arena was built in 1986, partly with a Michigan Department of Natural Resources grant. Its refrigeration unit was already secondhand then: it came from another arena and was sold to Negaunee at a reduced price.
The Negaunee Miners high school team plays here, along with the Iron Range Hockey Association, a house league for boys and girls from Mites through Midget that is affiliated with USA Hockey and the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association. The ice is in use daily from late fall through early spring for hockey, figure skating and open skating.
After about 40 years with only minor renovations, Negaunee voters approved a bond in May 2026 to renovate the arena. Replacing the ice chiller comes first, ahead of new bleachers, more locker rooms and a dehumidifier.
