Burnsville's two-rink city arena, rebuilt in a $5 million energy renovation that started in 2010
Burnsville Ice Center is the city's two-rink arena. By 2010, when a major renovation got under way, all of its major equipment was about 38 years old, and the building was producing 46 percent of the CO2 emissions from city-owned buildings. A 2009 federal Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant gave the city the push to start the work.
The $5 million project replaced the ice system, dasher boards, controls and HVAC, and installed an industrial-grade ammonia refrigeration system. Its waste heat now feeds a geothermal-based core water loop that heats the building and arena, the subfloor, the snow-melt pit and domestic water. The work cut the facility's carbon emissions by 20 percent.
The Apple Valley Burnsville Hockey Association, the Burnsville-Minnesota Valley Figure Skating Club and Burnsville Senior High athletics all use the ice. The figure club and the Ice Center's Learn to Skate program put on the annual Impressions on Ice show together, and the 2026 edition was the 48th. The Dakota Curling Club, founded in February 2006, was also based here as an arena club before it moved into a former grocery store in Lakeville.
