An 810-foot refrigerated ribbon of ice, free to skate, inside the 44-acre Central Park
Currently out of season The skating loop closed for the 2025-26 season on March 5. The City has not posted the 2026-27 opening date; its page lists last season's hours of 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, weather permitting. Official schedule update
The Central Park skating loop is an 810-foot-long, 20-foot-wide trail of refrigerated ice designed for pleasure skating. It was inspired by a ribbon-style skating loop in Chicago and designed to be free to use and to stay open on Minnesota’s warmer winter days. The ice is resurfaced approximately every two hours, and if you stay long enough you might see the Zamboni drive by.
The loop sits inside Central Park, a 44-acre park the city calls award-winning. Skaters use the Phenow Pavilion warming house, a park facility built for multiple use throughout the year.
The city’s goal, Mother Nature willing, is to open on Black Friday each year and close in early to mid-March. Outdoor ice, the loop included, is closed when the temperature is -10 degrees or lower or the wind chill is -20 degrees or lower. Most skaters bring their own skates: the city’s parks director estimates around 30 percent of visitors rent.
