Roseville's 110,000-square-foot refrigerated OVAL, a speed skating track and bandy venue
Currently out of season The City of Roseville's OVAL page says: "The OVAL Winter season begins mid-November through the first weekend of March." It gives no exact opening day yet; the City's public skating schedules page lists the OVAL schedule month by month. Official schedule update
The John Rose MN OVAL in Roseville is an outdoor facility with 110,000 square feet of refrigerated ice from November to March. The City calls it the largest outdoor refrigerated skating facility in the world, and the OVAL's own site says a USA Today survey voted it the number one place to skate in the US.
A 400 meter speed skating track surrounds an infield used for hockey or bandy. An 800-plus-ton refrigeration system with 84 miles of underground piping keeps the ice in shape even when temperatures climb into the 50s.
The City says the OVAL is one of the only Olympic-sized bandy ice sheets and has hosted World Cup speedskating and World and National Bandy Championships. Public skaters share it with the Midway Speedskating Club, USA bandy teams and Roseville youth hockey, and a grandstand outside the lobby seats up to 300. From May to September the same slab is used for inline skating and a skate park.
