Opened in 1970 with one sheet

Minnetonka Ice Arena opened in February 1970 with one sheet, Rink A, a standard 200-by-85-foot surface with seating for 1,000. Snow load and twisted roof brackets soon made the building unusable until repairs were made in 1972. A second sheet of outdoor refrigerated ice, run off Rink A's ice plant, became known as the Minnetonka bubble; it was turned into a permanent structure in 1989 and is now Rink B.

The most notable renovation came in 1997, when Rink A's classic wooden barrel roof gave way to a modern steel peaked roof at a cost of $2.7 million. The project added 500 seats along the west side, for 1,500 in all, with an elevator in the expanded seating. The old musty wood aroma of Rink A's paneled locker rooms is gone too, replaced by painted concrete walls. A tunnel connects the two buildings, and each rink has its own electric Zamboni.

The arena is home ice for the Lake Minnetonka Figure Skating Club, the Hopkins and Minnetonka youth hockey associations and Hopkins Park girls' high school hockey, and generations of Minnetonka Skippers and Hopkins Royals players have called the building home.
