Whitley Bay Ice Rink on Hillheads Road opened in 1955 and is the home of the Whitley Warriors ice hockey team. Wikipedia counts it as one of two permanent public ice rinks in the north east of England, and the rink says it was built to give families a fun and unusual fitness activity to enjoy all year round.
It was also the region's top concert venue until the Newcastle Arena opened in 1995, with Status Quo among the artists who played here, and the WWE, then the WWF, held three wrestling house shows at the rink in 1993. A ten-pin bowling centre upstairs, added in the 1960s, closed in 2007, and that area is now a refurbished entertainment suite and conference facility.
The rink says British and World Champions started at Whitley Bay, as did many ice hockey players who now play globally. The Whitley Bay Beacons, the rink's all-female team, play here, and in 2008 the rink gained new barriers, plexiglass, bench doors for hockey players and a new Zamboni.
