A 52-year-old arena the city plans to replace
The Chippawa Willoughby Memorial Arena is described by the City of Niagara Falls as a 52-year-old arena. The city and the Government of Ontario have been working toward replacing it with a new NHL-sized rink, a modern library and a year-round indoor sports facility, uniting two aging facilities in a modern community centre.
In July 2026 City Council approved the Chippawa Willoughby Community Centre project: a new arena, a library, a community gymnasium and flexible multi-purpose spaces, with the existing arena adapted into an indoor turf facility. The plans include a new NHL-sized ice pad, seven changerooms, more spectator seating and a community hub with an accessible library.
The city says the new building will let the arena host more community events and expand access to sport and recreation for residents, including those in the 1,100 new homes planned for the surrounding area. The project team is continuing detailed design and pre-construction work through a Progressive Design-Build process.
