Built on the site of the Cyanamid Niagara plant
The Gale Centre opened in June 2010 after a 23-month build that began in September 2008. It stands on the site of the demolished Cyanamid Niagara plant, part of a brownfield that stopped operating as a chemical plant in 1992. The City committed to one four-pad arena partly because two older municipal arenas, with three pads between them, needed to be retired.
The 204,000-square-foot building puts two pads on each side of a central concourse. Its main NHL-size rink seats about 2,000 spectators and was planned as a tournament venue, while the three community rinks each seat 250. A community room carries a Sports Wall of Fame that traces local skating back to the 1800s, alongside a pro shop and a skate-sharpening counter.
The Niagara Falls Canucks moved here from Niagara Falls Memorial Arena before the 2011 season, and the junior club still calls the building home. The Canucks hosted their preseason Canucks Jr Classic tournament here in August 2025.
