The Jim Tubman Chevrolet Rink in Canterbury Park was built and opened in 2017 as a covered, refrigerated outdoor rink in Ottawa's Alta Vista neighbourhood. It sits in the Canterbury Recreation Complex alongside the Brian Kilrea Arena, the Canterbury Pool and the community centre, and the City of Ottawa runs it.
The structure is what sets it apart: a steel joist canopy on slender HSS columns with chevron braces shelters the ice from sun and snow, and authentic hockey boards ring the surface. The permanent roof and refrigerated ice allow a long winter skating season. The design won an Award of Merit for Public Places and Civic Spaces at the 2019 Ottawa Urban Design Awards.
When the ice went in for the 2020 season, ice time was divided between public skating, pickup hockey and pickup ringette. In summer the ice comes out entirely and the covered slab hosts drop-in basketball, ball hockey and community events; the Canterbury Community Association has held its Summer Night Markets and Movie Nights on the rink surface.
