The Senators Foundation's Rink of Dreams at City Hall

The Rink of Dreams sits on Marion Dewar Plaza, the large open plaza in front of Ottawa City Hall that faces Confederation Park across Laurier Avenue. It is an outdoor refrigerated ice surface, and since 2013 the Ottawa Senators Foundation has funded the 12,500-square-foot rink.

Seasonal boards ring the sheet under permanent lights, and changing LED lighting mounted in the boards lights the ice for night skating. The plaza is also home to concerts, festivals and other community events, and its grounds hold a sound sculpture and a fountain beside the artificial ice pad.

The ground under the plaza was originally the parade ground for the Drill Hall. During the Second World War a complex of buildings meant to be temporary went up to house military staff, stayed in place for several decades and was eventually demolished so that City Hall and the courthouse could be built. The Regional Headquarters building became Ottawa's City Hall with the 2001 amalgamation of the region and its municipalities, and the rink now sits in front of it.
