Rebuilt in 1996 on the site of Queenstown's 1966 outdoor rink

The first artificial ice in Queenstown was laid in the Gardens in 1966, roughly where the arena stands now, and more than 2,000 people came to the opening. The rink saw the formation of the Queenstown Ice Hockey Club and the Queenstown Ice Skating Club, and closed in 1995 after financial difficulties.

Tahitian investors led by Christophe Huck and Firdaus Siddick finished the fully enclosed arena in 1996, and it is the only ice rink in Queenstown. The Graham family bought it in 2010 and began a long program of renovations, which included replacing the old wooden dasher boards with 15 millimetre-thick glass.

The arena hosted its first senior men's international games in September 2017, with Australia playing the New Zealand Ice Blacks in a three-game series, and a sold-out Canada versus USA game in 2018. It is the home venue of the SkyCity Stampede and the Wakatipu Wild.

Skating with children

Every skater must wear a helmet during public sessions, including at the ice bumper cars; a complimentary helmet is provided at skate hire, and a skater own well-fitting helmet or an approved protective head band is also accepted.
