A Central Otago outdoor rink with skating roots in the 1880s

Iceinline in Alexandra is a 60 by 30 metre outdoor rink in Molyneux Park that bills itself as the Southern Hemisphere's largest outdoor ice skating rink. It was established in 1992 on land the local council provided on lease, with a pavilion that was meant to have two storeys and was built to one.

Skating here is much older than the rink. Records show a skating club active in Alexandra as early as 1880, the Alexandra Winter Sports Club was founded in 1935, and it went on to host the first New Zealand Ice Championships. An outdoor rink built beside Manorburn Dam, with work starting in 1969, served the club until the move into town.

A new ice-making plant and heat exchange unit were finished in 2018 and a separate indoor curling rink opened in 2021. In May 2022 plans to roof the outdoor rink received a boost from the Central Lakes Trust, and a large heated lounge looks out over the ice.
