The Rockford Park District's Loves Park rink, its main sheet renamed for Icemen coach Tim Mattila in 2024
Loading public skate, freestyle, and stick & puck times for Carlson Ice Arena…
Carlson Ice Arena is the Rockford Park District's rink in Loves Park. It shares the building with Sapora Playworld, a three-level indoor playground, and one of the district's customer service offices. In 2020, when the district planned to close downtown's Riverview Ice House, it intended to consolidate its ice programs here.
The main rink has been the Coach Mattila Ice Rink since November 2024, marked by a sign above the entrance and a plaque with his biography. Tim Mattila took over Rockford's combined high school hockey team in 1991, which became the Rockford Icemen in 1995, and coached the Icemen for all 17 years of their existence, winning 16 state championships, 15 of them in a row.
The district's learn-to-skate group sessions meet here year-round, and its Pre-Hockey lessons prepare players for the Junior IceHogs Fundamental Hockey League. Friday nights bring Frosty Fridays, with a DJ and concession specials. The Rockford IceHogs have used the ice too: in 2011 a preseason game against the Chicago Wolves was moved here, when the building was called Carlson Arctic Ice Arena.

Adults are responsible for supervising children in their care during public skate, and skaters may not carry infants or children on the ice. Skaters must move counter-clockwise, and jumping is not allowed. For hockey sessions, helmets are required for everyone on the ice, and anyone under 18 must wear a helmet with a full face mask.
