Downtown Rockford's rink since 1975
Riverview Ice House has welcomed thousands of hockey players since it opened in 1975. It has two skating surfaces, used mainly for hockey leagues and programs, and the Rockford Park District runs its Jr. IceHogs Training Facility, with a Rapid Shot shooting system, on the same campus.
In 2020 the park district planned to close the aging building as a cost-saving measure and move its ice programs to Carlson Ice Arena in Loves Park. A grassroots group of figure skaters, hockey players and downtown advocates, Save Riverview Ice House, convinced it to keep the rink open instead. Construction started in April 2022: the obsolete refrigeration system, full of cracks and leaks, was replaced, the dasher boards and glass were upgraded, and the locker rooms were expanded with showers and restrooms in each. The improvements cost about $9 million.
The rink celebrated its reopening on October 4, 2023, with Rockford Hockey Club youth players on hand and a sold-out exhibition between the Rockford IceHogs and the Iowa Wild, the IceHogs' first preseason game in Rockford since 2017.
