Wilkes-Barre's late-1970s Ice-A-Rama, resurfaced in 2009 as the AHL Penguins' practice rink
The Toyota SportsPlex is the former Ice-A-Rama, which opened in Wilkes-Barre in the late 1970s as the city's first indoor rink offering public sessions, skating lessons and hockey teams. The Ice-A-Rama closed in the late 1990s in disrepair. A 2009 federal grant to the Coal Street Project, together with new tenants including the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, got the rink resurfaced and reopened as the Toyota SportsPlex.
The building holds a full-size rink with bleachers and spectator seating around the ice, plus locker rooms and an athletic training room for both teams. The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the AHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, use it as their official practice facility, and Wilkes University's men's and women's hockey teams have called it home since 2018. The Diamond City Figure Skating Club, formed in 2009, has been the rink's partner club since that year and keeps its offices in the building. The Anthracite Curling Club names it its home arena, and the rink runs a draft-style D-level adult hockey league alongside a B/C-level league.
A community dek hockey rink, about three quarters the size of a regular ice hockey rink, was added at the SportsPlex in October 2022. The rink's own Coal Street Hockey School is in its 13th year.
