Outdoor Olympic-size rink from Mayor Earl Schaffer's 1950-1962 recreation push; reopened in 2011
Currently out of season The City of Bethlehem's Recreation Bureau says the Earl E. Schaffer Bethlehem Municipal Ice Rink opens for rentals on Monday, October 19 and for public skate sessions on Friday, November 13, 2026, with Tuesday stick time from November 17; its weekly public skate grid is posted. Official schedule update
The Bethlehem Municipal Ice Rink on Illick's Mill Road came out of the recreation push of Mayor Earl E. Schaffer, who served from 1950 to 1962 and envisioned the rink and the rest of the complex. Under his leadership the city bought more land for Monocacy Park and Clearview Park and built a golf course, swimming pool, ice skating rink, Little League fields and tennis courts. Nearly 50 years after he left office, City Council named the rink for him in 2010.
The rink was closed for a year for a renovation and reopened to the public on November 4, 2011. The work added an underground piping system for brine to cool the ice, a new concrete pad, dasher boards and Plexiglas around what is now an official-size hockey rink, and a new scoreboard donated by Pennoni Associates.
The city describes it as the Lehigh Valley's only outdoor Olympic-sized rink. Its skating school teaches figure skating, hockey programs and private lessons.
