Notre Dame's two-sheet Compton Family Ice Arena
The Compton Family Ice Arena opened its doors to the public on October 18, 2011, and three nights later hosted its first Notre Dame hockey game, a 5-2 win over the Rensselaer Engineers.
It has two sheets. The 200-by-90-foot Charles "Lefty" Smith Rink is the home of the Notre Dame hockey program and holds 5,022 people, with 4,500 chair-backed seats and 522 standing-room spaces. Beside it, a 200-by-100-foot Olympic-size sheet serves everyone else who uses the building, with seating for about 350. The arena is also home to O'Brien's, a 250-seat club area with an Irish pub theme.
For visitors, the Olympic sheet is the one to look for: public skates and drop-in hockey run there, and online registration is required for both.
