South Bend's nonprofit Ice Box

Organized youth hockey came to South Bend in 1968 with the opening of Notre Dame's Athletic and Convocation Center, and the Irish Youth Hockey League followed in 1969. By 1975 the program had grown so large that a second rink opened on the city's west side, named the Ice Box. In 1981 South Bend Youth Hockey, Inc. was created as a nonprofit to run it, and in 1999 growing demand from youth, high school and senior leagues and figure and public skating led to a $2.5 million expansion that added a second rink.

Its facility today has three sheets of ice and a large heated lobby with couches and a fireplace. The building integrates a 1920 Oliver Plow factory with a new 37,000-square-foot metal structure, a project developed with the City of South Bend and its Redevelopment Commission to help revitalize the Near Northwest side.

The Ice Box is home to seven varsity and three junior varsity high school teams, 40 senior league teams and more than 40 Irish Youth Hockey teams, and together with Notre Dame's Compton Family Ice Arena it hosts more than 20 tournaments a year.
