Troy's city-run rink in Knickerbacker Park, closed in 2018 and rebuilt to reopen in January 2025
Knickerbacker Ice Arena is the City of Troy's rink, built in the early 1990s in Knickerbacker Park in the Lansingburgh neighborhood. The park dates to 1936 and is owned by a foundation, the Thomas A. and Helen L. Knickerbacker Memorial Playgrounds Inc., which has leased the grounds to the city since the 1970s. The city put up the arena and the pool on that land, so the rink stands next to the park's aquatic center.
The city closed the arena on January 29, 2018, when it could no longer make ice: the ice-making equipment and its piping had failed. The rink stayed shut until Rensselaer County and the city agreed in May 2024 to pay for a $2.5 million rebuild. It reopened in January 2025 with a reopening ceremony and a youth hockey game on the first night.
The city's own schedule calls the building The Knick, and the Troy Albany Youth Hockey Association lists it among its rinks. Before the shutdown, the sheet had a large Uncle Sam hat painted into the ice.
