UMass Amherst's 1993 arena complex, with a recreational rink beside the Division I ice
The Mullins Center began in 1985, when state representative William D. Mullins of Ludlow suggested that the University needed a multi-purpose arena and convocation center. Its doors opened in January 1993, replacing the 1930s Curry Hicks Cage as the home of Minutemen basketball and lifting the hockey team, which had been a club since the late 1970s, to Division I.
The William D. Mullins Memorial Center is a 10,500-seat facility on the campus of the University of Massachusetts, with a basketball court over an Olympic-sized hockey rink. The attached building has a permanent ice rink for recreational skating and for use as a practice facility for intercollegiate hockey and an intramural program, and the complex is described as completely ADA accessible.
The Community Ice Rink has recently installed a brand-new commercial skate sharpener courtesy of Sparx Hockey, and the arena looks out over playing fields toward the Hadley Hills and the Holyoke Range.
