The community sheet at Cable Dahmer Arena

Independence Community Ice is the second sheet of ice inside Cable Dahmer Arena, the 5,800-seat home of the ECHL's Kansas City Mavericks. Ground was broken on September 17, 2008, and the $60 million building, designed by Sink Combs Dethlefs, opened in November 2009 as the Independence Events Center, later renamed Silverstein Eye Centers Arena and then Cable Dahmer Arena. From October through April the complex can run two sheets of ice; from May through September it runs one.

The community rink is home to the KC Outlaws youth hockey organization, a member of the Mid America Hockey Association with teams from age 3 to 18, and to the Kansas City Knights high school club of the Mid America High School Hockey League. The Kansas City Hockey Club's AA travel program fields Squirt 10U, Peewee 12U and Bantam 14U teams, and John Scott Dickson is hockey director for the MAHA organization in Independence. Adults play in the Independence Adult Hockey League, a USA Hockey-sanctioned league.

Heartland Figure Skating Club, a U.S. Figure Skating member club, is the home club, and the Independence Skating Academy teaches the Learn to Skate USA curriculum. Heartland's Theatre on Ice winter show, The Nutcracker, reached its 10th annual production, rehearsed from October to early December and staged in the arena on December 6.
