Kansas City's original outdoor rink at Crown Center

The Crown Center Ice Terrace sits on the Blue Level of Crown Center Square and bills itself as Kansas City's original public outdoor ice skating rink. It is open for its 54th season, and its own words for the tradition are "over 50 years of skating." Seating runs outside around the rink for spectators.

The rink belongs to Crown Center, the result of the vision of the late Joyce C. Hall, the founder of Hallmark Cards, and his son Donald J. Hall, longtime Hallmark chairman. The complex opened in 1973 and became one of the nation's first mixed-use redevelopments. Crown Center Redevelopment Corp., a Hallmark subsidiary, runs it today.

Opening day is a ritual of its own, with skating, coffee and hot chocolate in the early morning. One Kansas City, Kansas, skater said his parents started doing the free skate as teenagers and passed the tradition on to him. The rink is outdoors, so dress for the weather; it may close in inclement weather.
