Opened as Ice Sports in 1995: an NHL-size indoor sheet plus a covered outdoor pavilion rink each winter
KC Ice Center opened in 1995 as Ice Sports, in a building earlier called The Rinks, in Shawnee, Kansas, and took its current name in 2010. The indoor rink is NHL size, 200 by 85 feet, with seating for 800 spectators, seven team locker rooms and an officials' room. Outside, a covered NHL-size pavilion rink with bleachers, a fire pit and patio seating adds a second sheet from November through February, and hosts box lacrosse and sometimes inline hockey in summer and fall.
KCIC is perhaps best known for hockey. It is home ice for the Kansas City Stars, Kansas' largest youth hockey organization, with house and travel teams for ages 4 to 18, and for the Kansas City Jets, its elite travel team for high school players, who have won the Midwest High School Hockey League varsity tournament. Adult teams range from professional-level players to novices and seniors.
Figure skating has a long history here too. The Kansas City Figure Skating Club, founded in 1937, made Ice Sports its home after it opened in 1995, and returned after AMF Ice Chateau closed in 2007. Skate school director Kay Olive calls the rink a good place for beginners to explore figure skating and hockey.
