Sydney's volunteer-built rink, rebuilt for a new era

Canterbury Olympic Ice Rink calls itself the home of ice skating in Sydney's Inner West. It is run by the Ice Skating Club of NSW Co-Operative, a not-for-profit entity that returns its income to the rink and is governed by a board of seven volunteer directors.

The rink was established in 1971, after the Burwood Glaciarium closed, by volunteer skaters, coaches, businessmen and tradespeople who pooled their resources to rebuild an old ice skating rink at Canterbury. Its mission statement puts training first, for figure skating, ice hockey and speed skating.

The building is now being rebuilt under a 21-year lease. An April 2026 update reported that concrete had been poured for the grandstand, plant room, change rooms and balcony, and that new refrigeration equipment was on its way from Canada. The rink also congratulated four athletes on their performances at the Winter Olympic Games, and says its reopening date will be announced soon.
